Class Participation/Attendance:
Students are encouraged to take an active role in the classroom. Success in statistics requires engagement with the material. Students who ask questions and actively participate in class discussions are always the most successful in mastering often complicated material.
Attendance will not be taken; however, quizzes and exams will rely heavily on material covered in class. Students who do not attend class regularly will have a difficult time doing well in the course. Students who miss a lecture will be responsible for getting the material from another student in the class.
Course Website:
- The course website will be updated frequently with additional information related to the course. Any changes to the syllabus or the course calendar will be made at the website. In the event that class is cancelled, notification will be posted to the website. It is strongly suggested that students bookmark the website and visit it frequently.

Homework:
- Homework assignments are always due at the start of the following class, unless otherwise noted. Homework will not be accepted late without an excuse deemed valid. For every homework assignment, students must *show all work* done in calculating answers to receive full credit. Assignments will be taken from the textbook, and some may require outside materials. Students can elect to complete the assignments on their own or in collaboration with other students; however, each student will be required to turn in their own homework.
Quizzes:
- There will be two (2) in-class quizzes given during the summer session. The quizzes are designed to check student understanding of material covered in class and in the textbook. Students may use their textbook and class notes to complete the quizzes, unless otherwise noted. The quizzes are meant to be “diagnostic” as they provide a way for each student to assess their understanding of material covered to date and to identify areas that need improvement before the exams.
Exams:
- There will be two (2) major in-class exams: a midterm exam and a final exam. Unlike the quizzes, these exams will be closed book and closed notes.
Make-Up Work:
- There are no scheduled make-up quizzes or exams. Absence on any of the exam or quiz dates will be considered an unexcused absence and result in a grade of zero (0) on that exam/quiz. If you know in advance that you must miss class on the date of such an assignment, you must inform me at least two weeks in advance. Otherwise, if you have a valid excuse, but were not able to inform me beforehand, you will need to obtain a signed letter from the Dean. In such cases, make-up arrangements will be made on an individual basis.
