Although cognitive behavioral interventions are effective
for treating anxiety disorders, we know surprisingly
little about exactly how and why these
treatments work. Moreover, we lack knowledge of
the cognitive processes involved in the maintenance,
inflation, and reduction of anxiety and fear. My
research focuses on the etiology, course, and treatment
of anxiety disorders, anxiety in older adults, mechanisms
of cognitive behavior therapy, and the relation of executive
functioning and anxiety. Current studies running
in my lab investigate the impact of normal age-related
changes to the brain and cognitive skills on response
to cognitive behavioral treatment, and how we might improve
upon current intervention strategies for late life anxiety. We
also study the effects of anxiety on cognitive skills
in younger and older adults using a variety of laboratory
tasks (e.g., Stroop, dot probe). My lab utilizes
a neurocognitive approach in researching these topics,
with the overarching goal of bridging applied and basic
science to advance our understanding of the nature and
treatment of anxiety. To facilitate my research
on CBT mechanisms, I co-founded the Rutgers Lifespan
Anxiety and Depression Clinic, which provides graduate
students clinical training, didactic lectures on psychopathology,
and hands-on research training.
